A gemstone is not a lucky charm that suits everyone born in a particular month. In Jyotish, a stone strengthens one planet — and that helps only when the planet works in your favour. The wrong stone can strengthen a planet that causes trouble in your chart.

Why your lagna matters more than your zodiac sign

Gemstone lists that go by your Sun sign or birth month miss the most important factor: your lagna (ascendant). The lagna decides which planets are friendly to you.

  • The lords of the 1st, 5th and 9th houses (the trikona) are generally favourable, so their stones are the usual first choice.
  • The lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses need caution, and their stones are usually avoided.
  • The other planets depend on their placement and strength.

Example: for Mesha (Aries) lagna, Mars rules the 1st house, the Sun the 5th and Jupiter the 9th, so red coral, ruby and yellow sapphire are generally suitable. Mercury rules the 3rd and 6th houses, so an emerald is generally avoided — even though it is a popular stone.

Your dasha matters too

The planet whose mahadasha or antardasha you are running has a strong say in your life. A stone for that planet can help a great deal — or do harm, if the planet is weak or badly placed. That is why a stone that helped a friend may not help you.

Quality: what to look for

  • Natural and untreated — no glass, synthetic or filled stones.
  • A gem-testing lab certificate with every stone.
  • Clarity and colour over size: a clean, well-coloured stone of the right weight works better than a large, flawed one.
  • Weight is advised from your chart and budget, usually in carats or ratti.
  • The stone should touch your skin, so it is set in a ring or pendant open at the back.

How to wear it

Each stone is worn on its planet's day, on a set finger and in a set metal. For the stones we source:

GemstoneDayFingerMetal
Yellow sapphire (Pukhraj)ThursdayIndexGold
Emerald (Panna)WednesdayLittleGold or silver
Red coral (Moonga)TuesdayRingGold or copper
Moonstone (Chandrakant Mani)MondayLittle or ringSilver
Hessonite (Gomed)SaturdayMiddleSilver
Cat's eye (Lehsunia)TuesdayMiddleSilver

Wear it in the morning on that day, after it has been energised with the planet's mantra. Stones ordered from us arrive energised, with written instructions.

Stones to be extra careful with

Blue sapphire (Neelam), hessonite (Gomed) and cat's eye (Lehsunia) act quickly and strongly. Traditionally, a Neelam is tried for a few days before it is worn for good. Never wear these three without a chart check.
